about

To my friends, enemies, family, colleagues, and listeners,

Chances are, you have stumbled upon this album quite by accident. I expect nothing different; oftentimes we must relax and let the current of existence take us. If I am lucky, the current of existence has taken you here, thereby intertwining our threads for a brief moment before those threads part ways once again. If I am not lucky, you will dismiss this work of music out-of-hand and summarily exit. But, so it goes.

This album is the culmination of a year or so of writing, recording, reviewing, and producing, began shortly after the release of my first EP, “It All Falls Apart” (recorded with the brilliant Russell Wagoner, who makes his presence known on this work as well). In short, it is loosely the story of growing up in my hometown, a majority-white and painfully wealthy suburb of Washington, D.C. Dominated by housing developments and strip malls, Centreville, Virginia is about as inorganic a place as you can find. The people there are plastic, synthetic shadows of men; the police force’s entire job consists of catching “aggressive drivers” and teenagers smoking weed; all the gas stations have bulletproof Plexiglas windows in front of the cashiers even though there has not been a violent crime in the area for twenty years. I am twenty-one years old, but I have found it difficult to resolve the angst that defines my memories of suburbia.

This album attempts to explore that place. It is the story of the heroin trade in my high school that made headlines, the boredom that pervaded every hour I spent unable to sleep, and the death of a friend at the hands of a deeply troubled young man in April of 2007. It is the story of the girls I fell in love with, the delusions of grandeur that defined us, and the existential nihilism that seemed to follow me wherever I went. They say you cannot escape the place you grew up; well, this is my attempt at a breakout.

So route this through your biggest speakers, pour yourself a glass of cheap wine, and relax. I found great joy creating this album, and I hope you find great joy listening to it.
